How does one enable the Maintenance and Troubleshooting menu?
From the Start menu, select Programs/Administrative
Tools/Active Directory Users and Computers:
- Right click the domain name at the top
of the tree in the left windowpane, and select Properties.
- Click the Group Policy tab.
- Select the Default Domain Policy and click
Edit.
- A Group Policy window will appear.
- Expand the Windows Settings under User
Configuration in the tree in the left windowpane.
- Select Remote Installation Services under
Security Settings.
- Double click the Choice Options in the
right windowpane.
You can now enable the items you want to appear
on the Client Installation main menu. Enable the Maintenance and
Troubleshooting menu item by selecting Allow under the Tools setting.
These steps will enable the menu items for all users. You can also
enable or disable items for different group policies. This allows
different items to be available based on the user name used to login
on the client.
What are the server requirements?
RIS Menu Editor v1.0 requires a Windows 2000
server with Remote Installation Services installed and 1 MB of free
hard-disk space.
RIS Menu Editor v2.0 requires a Windows 2000 or 2003 server with
Remote Installation Services installed and 1 MB of free hard-disk
space.
What is a boot image file?
There are several types of "boot image
files." A boot image file is a copy of an entire disk, either
hard disk or floppy disk, compressed into a single file. RIS uses
boot image files to install a copy of an OS onto a client PC. Disk-imaging
software copies the contents of an existing hard disk into an boot
image file, which can then be used to install other clients. RIS
Menu Editor creates floppy boot image files that are used by RIS
to boot the client as if it were booted from the floppy.
Can this utility be used for installing
operating systems other than Windows 2000 / XP / 2003?
Yes, but doing so is complicated. What one
needs to do is create a boot image file that connects the client
to the network and allows access to a shared copy of the OS installation
files. One can install from the network, or transfer these files
to the local hard disk and start the OS installation from the local
copy. Using install scripts, one can create an unattended setup.
